MECHANICAL COMPREHENSION TESTS QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Mechanical Comprehension Tests are an assessment tool used for measuring a candidate’s ability to perceive and understand the relationship of physical forces and mechanical elements in practical situations. This aptitude is important in jobs and training programs that require the understanding and application of mechanical principles. The types of jobs which will normally require this level of ability include practical jobs such as train driver, firefighter, some armed forces roles, engineering roles and other similar jobs where an ability to work with mechanical concepts is crucial.

Mechanical comprehension or aptitude tests have been in use for many years as a method for assessing a candidates potential to perform a specific job. Predominantly, they are used in careers which require an ability to work with, or understand, mechanical concepts. Examples of types of careers which require this level of aptitude include:

- Train driving as part of the traction training;
- Driving careers such as lorry driver and even bus driver;
- Armed forces jobs and in particular the Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and the Army Engineers;
- Engineering careers which form part of general indstrial operations;
- Emergency services and in particular the role of a firefighter as they are required to use hydraulic rescue and cutting equipment;
- Motor mechanic;
- Aircraft engineering works.

Of course, the above list is not exhaustive and there are many other jobs which require an ability to interpret mechanical concepts.

Some mechanical comprehension tests include fault diagnosis questions which are used to select personnel for technical roles where they need to be able to find and repair faults in different operating systems. I have deliberately not included these types of questions within this guide as they are being used less and less.

- It is highly probable that you will be assessed against both speed and accuracy during the mechanical aptitude test - therefore, when carrying out your practice try not to second guess. Instead, think about the question carefully and the practicalities behind the mechanical principles used. This will help you to come to the correct answer through a process of elimination.

- The questions will usually be multiple-choice in nature so try to work out which answers presented are definitley incorrect. This will then leave you with only 2 to choose from and it will make your life alot easoer.

- The best way to prepare for these tests is to carry out loads of sample test question practice and the following guide will help you to do just that:
