TIPS FOR PASSING THE TRAIN DRIVER INTERVIEW

The different types of Train Driver interview questions

Basically there are two different types of interview questions that you could be asked. I will try to explain each of them and what they mean:

1. Generic questions about you and your knowledge of the TOC and the Train Drivers role.

Generic questions can be in any format. There is no particular structure to this type of question but they are generally far easier to respond to. Examples of generic questions would include:

- Why do you want to become a Train Driver?
- What has attracted you to this TOC in particular?
- What have you learnt about the role of a Train Driver?
- Why should we choose you against the other applicants?

2. Role related questions.

This type of question is more common during the structured interview and includes questions that are based around the job description/person specification. Examples of role related questions include:

- Being able to work under pressure.
- Following rules or guidelines.
- Providing a high level of customer care and service.
- Working as part of a team to achieve a task.
- Communicating a message to a group of people.
- Working with people from different backgrounds.
- Dealing with difficult and aggressive people.

Now take a look at the following example train driver interview question and answer.

TRAIN DRIVER INTERVIEW QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Question 1 - Why do you want to become a Train Driver?

This question is inevitable, so it is important that you ensure you have a suitable answer prepared. Many people will respond with a standard answer such as “It’s something that I’ve always wanted do since I was young”. Whilst this is OK you need to back it up with genuine reasons that relate to the TOC you are applying for and other important reasons such as working in a customer-focused environment and a desire to learn new skills.

This type of question may be posed in a number of different formats such as the following:

Q. Why do you want to become a Train Driver with our Company?

Q. What has attracted you to the role of Train Driver?

Now take a look at the following sample response which will help you to prepare for this type of question. Once you have read it, use the template on the next page to create your own response based upon your own experiences and knowledge.

SAMPLE RESPONSE - Why do you want to become a Train Driver?

“I have wanted to become a Train Driver for many years now and have been preparing for the role for a long time. I have been very careful about which TOC to apply for and I have been impressed with the way your company operates. It sets itself high standards in terms of customer service and the safety standards that are expected of its employees. Apart from the fact that driving trains is quite an exciting job, I also very much enjoy new and different challenges. I understand that as a Train Driver there are a lot of new skills to learn, especially during the early years. The type of person I am means that I would work hard to ensure that I passed every exam first time. I also enjoy working in a customer-focused environment where a high level of service is essential. As a Train Driver you are responsible for the customer’s safety and I would enjoy the high level of responsibility that comes with the position.”
