Interviewing for a management position of the team I already am in

Hi all,

After advice from other members around the business, I have decided to apply for the manager position of my current team. I have informally led the team since our old manager left the team around 1 year ago and it has been vacant due to a hiring freeze. During this time, I've led most of our day-to-day activities and delivered at least 1 incredible project. The hiring manager even complimented me, saying I overachieved and that it would not have been possible without me.

When I told him I was applying, he said the team needed to be autonomous and better at innovating. However, I feel at this stage, I was not given the authority or budget to implement changes that a manager would. Instead, I've been focusing on small, subtle changes that improve our capabilities and team as a whole. This ranges from allowing team members to be more independent, reviewing our tooling and many other examples. I've always had a vision of where I would take the team but I've never had the chance to address it. He mentioned he thought that it would be too soon based on a lot of these things; however, he did agree to give me an interview.

If anyone has advice on how to navigate this in the interview or things to do, it would be greatly appreciated. For reference, I am currently considered a professional and was previously suggested for a promotion around a year ago to a senior position, but this has yet to happen.

I would recommend Richard to anyone who is looking for a job. Interview preparation closes the gap between your experience, skills and qualification. You can have all these three but without being able to tell a good story to convince your potential employer.

Being a non native English speaker and born outside the UK with good experience, skills and education I found it challenging to interact during interviews, that's when I followed Richard.

It wasn't easy at first but now I mastered everything. My introduction on 'tell me about yourself' has been always my greatest achievement as I use this opportunity to cause the hiring manager ask the questions I want them to using the SEAT approach which aligns me to the job description, my skillset and the company.

Wanted to express my thanks here. I’ve always struggled with interviews, as I’m not the best about talking about myself, especially in a professional manner. 7 months ago I had an interview for a management position. I found your free YouTube videos, and watched so many of them. Re-watched them several times, took notes and adjusted the talking points to fit me, my experience, and what the company was looking for. I’m happy to say, thanks to your help, I got my very first management position. My first salary. My first time having insurance since I was 21. I cannot thank you enough. Now, I again have another interview for another management position outside of the retail world… which would be life changing for me. I have a phone interview scheduled so I’m hoping it goes well. Thanks to your tips, I now know not to underestimate the skills I have acquired, how to sell myself on my cover letter, resume, and in an interview setting. As well as I now know how to speak with confidence, and professionalism just from hearing how you speak in your videos, and the way you carry yourself. Thank you for being a great resource to so many people.
