Hi there, no problem:

In addition to the tips below, I also have the following resources:

Nurse Manager / Supervisor interview answers: https://passmyinterview.com/nurse-manager-interview/

Training video: https://youtu.be/zMXe26D5FXw?si=S58efcHJWfanDb62

1. Conflict Resolution

Q: “Tell me about a time you resolved conflict in your team.”

Leadership Philosophy

“I believe conflicts should be addressed quickly, fairly, and professionally, with a focus on maintaining trust, teamwork, and patient safety.”

STAR Example

  • S: “In my previous role as ward sister, two nurses had a disagreement over patient handover, which began to affect communication during shifts.”

  • T: “I needed to address the situation quickly to prevent any negative impact on patient care and team morale.”

  • A: “I arranged a private meeting with both individuals, gave each time to share their perspective without interruption, and identified that the core issue was unclear expectations around documentation. I clarified the handover policy, offered refresher training, and agreed on a consistent approach moving forward.”

  • R: “Both nurses agreed on the new process, communication improved immediately, and subsequent handover audits showed 100% compliance.”

Forward-Looking Statement

“This experience reinforced my belief in addressing issues early and constructively, something I would continue to do as Nurse Lead Manager.”

2. Team Management

Q: “How do you ensure your team performs effectively?”

Leadership Philosophy

“I believe effective team management comes from clear communication, setting high standards, and supporting staff to achieve them.”

STAR Example

  • S: “When I first joined my previous ward, staff morale was low and there was inconsistent adherence to care plans.”

  • T: “I wanted to create a cohesive, motivated team who worked to the same high standard.”

  • A: “I held a team meeting to set clear expectations, introduced a monthly recognition award, and implemented regular one-to-one check-ins. I also encouraged staff to contribute improvement ideas, which gave them ownership of the ward’s success.”

  • R: “Within three months, sickness rates dropped by 18%, patient satisfaction scores rose by 12%, and the team consistently met performance targets.”

Forward-Looking Statement

“I will continue to manage with transparency, recognition, and support to ensure high performance and strong team cohesion.”

3. Prioritising Tasks

Q: “Give an example of when you had to prioritise multiple competing demands.”

Leadership Philosophy

“In nursing leadership, prioritisation is about balancing urgency, safety, and resources without losing sight of long-term goals.”

STAR Example

  • S: “On a particularly busy shift, we had three urgent admissions, a deteriorating patient, and two planned discharges to coordinate.”

  • T: “I had to ensure all patients received safe, timely care while keeping the ward running smoothly.”

  • A: “I assessed each situation against clinical urgency, delegated the stable discharges to the junior nurse and discharge coordinator, assigned an experienced nurse to the deteriorating patient, and personally oversaw the admissions process. I also kept open communication with the multidisciplinary team to avoid delays.”

  • R: “All urgent cases were managed promptly, the discharges went ahead as planned, and patient flow on the ward remained uninterrupted.”

Forward-Looking Statement

“I always prioritise based on patient safety first, then workflow efficiency, and I would apply the same approach as Nurse Lead Manager.”

Hi @ting-ting,

Of course, I can help with that 😊 This is a very common question in nursing interviews, and the key is structure so you do not go blank.

As a starting point, choose one clear, meaningful experience from your clinical placement where you:

  • Learned something important

  • Made a positive difference to a patient or team

  • Developed confidence, communication, or professionalism

Use a simple STAR structure in your head:

  • Situation: Where were you and what was happening?

  • Task: What was your role as a student nurse?

  • Action: What did you personally do?

  • Result: What did you learn or what was the outcome?

Before I give you a tailored example, can I ask a few questions so I can help you properly?

  • Was this experience in a hospital ward, community setting, or clinic?

  • Did it involve patient care, communication, teamwork, or handling a challenge?

  • Is this for a band 5 nurse interview or a postgraduate programme?

Reply with a few details and I’ll help you turn your experience into a strong, memorable interview answer step by step.

Richard
