Hi Carol,

No problem...

Here are 4 powerful tips for preparing for an Office Manager interview.

In addition to the following tips, I recommend studying thee two videos:

OFFICE MANAGER INTERVIEW QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

And

HOW TO SPEAK LIKE A MANAGER

1. Understand the Role and the Company

Before the interview, research the company in detail — its services, size, culture, and recent news. Understand exactly what they expect from an Office Manager:

  • Overseeing office operations

  • Managing admin staff and resources

  • Handling budgets, schedules, and supplier relationships

  • Maintaining a productive, positive work environment

Preparation step: Write down 3 ways your skills and past experience match their requirements and be ready to share specific examples.

2. Prepare STAR Method Examples for Core Skills

Office Managers are expected to excel in organization, leadership, problem-solving, and communication.
Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to prepare examples for situations such as:

  • Improving office efficiency

  • Resolving conflicts between team members

  • Managing a tight budget or deadline

  • Introducing a new system or process

Pro tip: Always focus your answers on results and measurable improvements (e.g., “Reduced office supply costs by 20% through supplier negotiations.”)

3. Showcase Your Prioritization and Multitasking Skills

You’ll likely face competency-based questions like:

  • “How do you manage competing deadlines?”

  • “Tell me about a time you handled multiple urgent requests.”

Preparation step: Be ready to explain your workflow system — whether that’s using project management tools, daily task lists, or calendar blocks — and give an example where your organization prevented mistakes or delays.

4. Ask Impactful Questions at the End

When they ask, “Do you have any questions for us?”, use this as a chance to show your strategic thinking:

  • “What are the biggest challenges the office faces right now, and how could I help address them in my first 90 days?”

  • “How do you measure success for the Office Manager role in this company?”

This not only demonstrates interest but positions you as someone already thinking about delivering results.

I hope this helps!
