Hi Richard, I hope all is well.
I have been out of work since July 2024. My last role was made redundant due to new systems in place. Below I have a list of things I have been doing whilst looking for work. I need some help on how I could turn this into an structured answer for the question 'Tell Me About Yourself.'
- Completed online courses and gained qualifications
- Currently doing voluntary work for a leading food charity (completed 504.75 hours of voluntary work to date)
- Learning to drive
- Continuous Personal Development – online videos on Confidence and Solving Problems at Work
- Taking time out to re-evaluate my career choices
Kind regards,
Sabrina
Hi Sabrina,
Thanks for sharing, and that's great that you have so much voluntary work. We can definitely craft a strong "Tell me about yourself" answer. Can you let me know which role you are applying for?
Thanks,
Richard
Hi Richard, thank you for your reply. At the moment I am currently applying for Administrator roles.
That's great - I have a detailed video on how to answer "tell me about yourself" for Admin roles here.
Give it a watch and then if you want to send me your draft answer here, I will help you improve it 🙂
Richard
Hi Richard,
I hope this message finds you well.
As I have been out of work for quite some time, I think it would be fitting to use the 'PPP Method' rather than the 'S.E.A.T Method.' Below I have put together a draft answer for the question ‘Tell Me About Yourself.?’
Thank you for your continued help and support 🙂
Past
First of all, I would like to thank you for giving me this opportunity. I would describe myself as highly organised, detail-orientated, flexible and reliable.
For over 7 years I worked as an Administrator for the Learning and Development department. I gained experience in coordinating training courses and events, managing emails and correspondence, maintaining accurate records, managing multiple tasks and duties, organising diaries, and supporting various departments to complete time sensitive projects.
Present
I left my last job after my previous company went through a redundancy process which affected me. Since then, I have embraced this time as an opportunity for growth, by re-evaluating my career choices and updated my skills by completing online courses in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. To refresh my skills and knowledge, I practice regularly using downloadable exercises provided to me during the course. I have learnt how to create Excel reports and tables, create Word templates, format texts, and create PowerPoint slides using audio, video and imagery.
I have also watched online videos on Confidence and Solving Problems, and completed a Level 2 qualification in Customer service which I know is relevant to this position.
The knowledge I have gained during these courses will add value to this company where I will be more proficient in my role, perform tasks correctly, and help to reduce costs.
I volunteer with Food Cycle, a local food charity. I help prepare three-course vegetarian meals for around 80 people each week using surplus ingredients. This role has strengthened my time management, problem-solving, teamwork, and organisational skills, while reflecting my personal values of (compare values with company values)
I have a track record of success. As a volunteer I have completed 514.25 hours of volunteering to date. In my previous role I won an award for increasing e-learning compliance from 70% to 90%, and praised by my manager for my strong work ethic.
Plans
I am now looking for a position where I can use my skills and experience in (Skill 1) and (Skill 2) and act as a positive role model for your company.
I am motivated and excited about this role and believe I will have an immediate impact on the team. I am looking for long-term employment, with the opportunity to grow and develop with your company.
Hi @sabrina57a, this is a really good draft and yes, PPP is a great choice when you’ve had time out of work.
A few quick tweaks to make it stronger at interview:
Keep the opening shorter
Go straight into your value. For example: “Thank you for the opportunity. I’m an experienced administrator with 7 years in Learning and Development, supporting training coordination, diaries, records and stakeholder communication.”
Keep your redundancy line simple and confident
For example: “I was made redundant due to restructure, and I used the time to update my skills and get back interview-ready.”
Achievements
I thought your e-learning compliance result sounded excellent. Lead with that. For example: “I improved e-learning compliance from 70% to 90% by organising reminders, tracking completions and making it easy for managers to follow up.”
Plans section: be specific to the role
Instead of “skill 1/skill 2”, name them. For example: “I’m now looking for a role where I can use my organisation, admin support and customer service skills in a busy team, and commit long-term.”

@richard-mcmunn Hi Richard, thank you for your reply. That was very helpful. I have now shortened my answers. For the achievements, can I also include the 514 hours of voluntary work, or leave this out?
Kind regards
Sabrina
