Hi there, here are some tips to help you get started:

1. Start With a Strong Profile Statement

This is the first thing a recruiter sees—use it to position yourself as managerial material.
This example is much shorter than what we would recommend, but it gives you a taste:

"Results-driven Engineering Graduate with a strong foundation in problem-solving, process improvement, and team collaboration. Proven leadership through academic projects, internships, and voluntary roles. Eager to bring organisational, analytical, and people management skills to a dynamic managerial role in the engineering sector."

2. Focus on Transferable Skills Relevant to Management

Even without formal managerial experience, you can highlight leadership and coordination abilities gained from:

  • University group projects (team leadership, delegation, planning).

  • Internships or work placements (liaising with teams, reporting progress).

  • Volunteering or extracurricular roles (event organisation, mentoring peers).

Key Managerial Skills to Highlight:

  • Leadership & Team Coordination

  • Project Management (even small-scale)

  • Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Decision-Making & Problem-Solving

  • Time & Resource Management

  • Analytical Thinking

3. Reframe Your Education to Show Leadership Potential

Instead of just listing your degree, emphasise management-relevant achievements.
Example:
BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering – University of XYZ (2021–2025)

  • Led a 5-person team in a final-year design project, managing timelines, task allocation, and stakeholder presentations.

  • Conducted feasibility studies and presented recommendations to faculty and industry guests.

  • Selected as course representative, acting as liaison between students and faculty.

4. Add a ‘Key Achievements’ Section

This gives recruiters quick evidence of leadership and results.
Example:

  • Coordinated an engineering society workshop attended by 60+ students, securing sponsorship and managing logistics.

  • Successfully supervised a small team of student volunteers during an engineering hackathon.

  • Improved project efficiency in a group assignment by implementing task-tracking tools, reducing delays by 20%.

5. Tailor Your Experience Section for Leadership

If your past roles were technical, emphasise the people and project elements.
Example:
Engineering Internship – ABC Manufacturing (Summer 2024)

  • Assisted in coordinating production schedules with cross-functional teams.

  • Prepared progress reports for management and suggested process improvements.

  • Supported quality inspections, ensuring compliance with project requirements.

IMPORTANT TIP

It is essential to use action words in your CV, such as "led," "developed," "managed," "achieved," and "improved."
